To calculate DPMO:

$$\text{DPMO} = \text{DPU} \times \frac{1,000,000}{\text{Opportunities}}$$

Where DPU (defects per unit) is:

$$\text{DPU} = \frac{\text{Defective Units}}{\text{Total Number of Units}}$$

What is DPMO?

Defects Per Million Opportunities: a discrete, pass or fail, process quality performance benchmark.

Using a million opportunities of failure allows the comparison of processes of varying complexity.
