About This Course

Course Description  (expand)

This course is tailored to your specialist requirements for advanced manufacturing. Depending on your needs potential topics can include:

Data Analysis and Presentation

This is about acquiring and visualising the data relevant to your customers and your process. It will include tools for comparing data samples while seeking process improvement including capability analysis against customer specifications. Depending on your prior understanding of the statistics involved it could start from graphical methods, continue to the basics of inferential statistics and extend to Hypothesis Testing, Anova and Regression.

Measurement Systems Analysis

A practical understanding of Measurement Systems Analysis and how to apply it to instrument measurement systems, manual measurements and even human appraisal judgement. It is quite often true that we have a slightly inflated sense of our own capability in achieving our critical process measurements. And as the old saying goes “If you can’t measure it, you can’t control it”

Process Problem Solving

There are two broad fields of problem solving: a number of additive and contributory causes, only one true cause among many possibles. These two cases require very different approaches and start with the simplest team based tools such as Cause and Effect Analysis and The Five Whys and progress to Analytical Root Cause Analysis for complex systems investigation. These tools can stand alone or they can be fitted to the problem identification and resolution step of your existing Defect Elimination strategy such as 8D or A4.

Design of Experiments

Design of Experiments provides a highly effective and a resource efficient strategy to model a complex process leading to a clear understanding of its main control factors and their optimisation. There are many different orthogonal designs to choose from. This will provide a practical guide to their selection, and a practical approach to their use for both an initial screening experiment and a full modelling experiment.

FAQ

How are your courses taught?

We use small class sizes to allow lots of interaction with the instructor, as well as allowing us to make the course tailored and relevant to your specific interests.

There will also be quite a few breakout sessions of smaller teams of students and instructors to test and practice the tools.

We like participation! We think as students you learn most by questioning, challenging and testing what you hear.

How do I join the classroom?

We use Zoom Workplace for all teaching and breakout sessions. It's free to download and use. A laptop or desktop computer with a camera and a headset with microphone will work best in class.

The course notes and teaching examples will be distributed via a public One Drive folder for you to download your own local copies.

What time does teaching take place?

Weekdays, from 9am until 4pm UK time, with plenty of breaks in between!

A typical day usually goes as follows but these standard times can be adjusted to accommodate schedule conflicts (including different time zones!). Let us know at the start of the class and we’ll work it out with agreement of the class at the time.

9:00 – 10:00
Morning session
10:00 – 10:30
Break
10:30 – 12:30
Mid-morning session (with a short mid-session break)
12:30 – 14:00
Break for lunch
14:00 – 16:00
Afternoon session (with a short mid-session break)
What software will I need?

For Six Sigma modules only:

We will use the statistics package JASP, which is free to download and use. Simply download and install it before the class starts.

Get JASP

This is supported by a number of universities and institutions lead by the University of Amsterdam.

It is a port of SPSS from IBM. It has all the capabilities and functionality that we need right up to the expert analyst level.

It is easy to use and it has excellent reporting formats for your project documentation.

It is important that we all have access to the same tools for classwork and breakouts and JASP is a great choice for all of our stats analysis needs.

You will easily transfer the knowledge gained using JASP to any of the other proprietary stats tools used in your business.

Will I be recorded?

No. We don't record any of our live teaching with students.

Can I defer partway through a course?

Yes, of course. Don't worry!

If at any point the demands of your job or your personal plans change and conflict with the schedule you can always defer to a later cycle and pick up where you left off.

How can I protect my privacy?

No problem.

Firstly, we don't record any of our live teaching.

We also don't required you to give your full name when you sign into the classroom.

Before joining the class you will also be able to set up a background blur to obscure things that might be in view behind you.

Can I get course notes?

We will send you a copy of all the slides and all the training examples before the start of the class.

We think it is important that you have access and are able to make notes on the material as you learn.
